SAN LORENZO, Alameda County — Alameda County has explained why the formal community names used on addresses matter for unincorporated areas near Hayward and San Leandro.
The county’s address-change FAQ says approximately 29,000 addresses were updated across unincorporated communities including Ashland, Cherryland, Hayward Acres, Fairview, San Lorenzo and Castro Valley. Its goal is to reflect the proper locality names rather than describe these neighborhoods as part of a nearby incorporated city.
What happened to ZIP codes?
The county says the project did not change ZIP codes. San Lorenzo’s existing ZIP code 94580 is among those referenced in the project. People should not assume the update requires switching to a neighboring city or obtaining a new postal code.
Why does the government care?
Using the right place name can improve geographic clarity for local services, public records and residents. The county describes its communities as distinct places recognized in county planning documents for many decades.
Residents with questions about a specific address can consult the county’s lookup and FAQ. This article summarizes the county’s address-recognition work; it is not a claim that every individual mailing address was newly reassigned in November.
